Posts for the Deck

First, on Friday, Len finished doing the venting of the plumbing system.  He finished the suite above the garage and then above our bathroom.

Up above the garage

A lovely new access hole in our closet

Then it was on to the deck rail.  We hummed and hawed about which way to go.  In the end, we couldn't really do Dave's suggested method because of differences in our deck border thickness, so had to do a lower rail and pickets.  Still room for snow removal.

Measuring for deck height

Make sure they are plumb

Drilling for big anchor bolts

Trimming the posts for the bottom rail

Chiseling out the rail slot

Cutting to length

The hardware

Bolts go in with the help of our trusty clamps

Ready to add the large posts
So that was Saturday, a very satisfying day with lots of VP and great weather.  Then on Sunday, Len started on the large 6" posts.  They had to be manufactured from our timbers which were cut from the trees we took down 2 years ago.
Taking a post from the pile to the workshop
Measured and cut to approximate length
4 cuts but still not enough
A hand saw finishes the cut

Using the planer made the job go quite quickly

Planed posts ready for fitting

The plan is to measure for the bottom rail, cut out a rectangular hole to fit the bottom rail and also cut it to fit on the deck edge.  Len tells me there is another hole to fit the top rail.  I'll believe it when I see it....which should be tomorrow sometime.  Then there will be a finish rail on top of it all once the pickets are in.  You won't want to miss a minute of the excitement....stay tuned.

Meanwhile, I painted the face of the facia board around the deck.  It looks much better "green".

  1. As Kermit would say being green is the way.
Glad to finally see inside Len's shop - I envy him the space. Nice attention to detail - wood on the saw horses to keep from marring the work. Having the vacume on the hand planner (I have the same model) is a nice touch!
My favorite Sunday reading - keep those blogs comming.
