A woodshed gets finished

I decided to build all the walls on the shop floor and move them  as a unit. The front and back walls
were longer and I had to get Cathryn to help move them. Once in place, up they went. These walls are all cedar from leftover 2 x 10s, they should last along time.

Front wall with temporary bottom rail for transporting.

Bottom brace off and ready to set up

Up and in place ready for siding
I had a few sheets of leftover OSB but I did end up buying one sheet to cover in the storage side.
Walls done and on to the roof rafters

All rafters are in place time for roofing material.
When we had the house material cut and installed I had asked the roofer for some material that might get used on the woodshed. He cut me 40 pieces of 40 inch long roofing like the house.  It was waste material to him as it was a colour that he had left over and it didn't exactly match the house. This wouldn't be an issue as you can't see it from the front.

Roofing installed

The finished shed with trim

Now time to fill it

When filled it will hold one cord of wood
I guess I have to deal with the leak from the transmission of the backhoe now. That will be a fairly tough project as everything is so heavy. Maybe I'll find something else to do.

A woodshed to match the house

The kids are out for a few days and they always come expecting to do something.  We didn't want to disappoint them so we decided to start the woodshed.

Making bases for the posts

Concrete going in

Finished with sonna tube posts in place

I had some large 6 x 6 posts from our trees and they became the foundation
We are trying to use up the left over lumber for this project and that is where the floor joists are coming from.  I had some 2 x 12s left over as well as 2 x 10s and 2 x 8s. All of these were put through the table saw to get a bunch of 2 x 6s. I made just enough with some left over for the roof.
Soon the floor joists were in place

A test was done and the structure was deemed safe
Michael and Kyla have gone home and so I am starting the floor. We had some planks left over from milling our trees and they will work fine for floorboards. I left a space between the planks for ventilation.
Rough cut planks all nailed in place

Next step to cut the planks flush with ends.
I am using up some 2 x 10 cedar cut to 2 x 3 for all the wall framing. Since the walls at the wood storage end will have slats for drying it will be good to have cedar as it weathers much better than spruce or fir.
First wall is up on the west end

This is the back wall

This will be the dividing wall

I wanted to have storage for the snowblower, chain saws, weed wacker, fuel and pressure washer. I'll probably hang a few axes, and some garden tools inside.  I am going to hang a couple of large ladders on the back as well.

More tomorrow.

Another milestone in the land of house construction

As predicted, it didn't take very long to finish the shop siding and soffits. I started on June 11th and finished today June 18th that would be one week. The only thing left would be the window cross units and the drywall on the ceiling neither of which prevented me from getting my final inspection done.

The finished shop
We took permits out in May of 2010 so after 3 years and 1 month we can finally take down all the permits.
Now you see them

Now you don't

What should I do now hmmmmm maybe have a beer and celebrate.

Finally it's time to pretty up the shop

I'm sure my neighbours were wondering if we would leave the shop covered in Cariboo siding. (House wrap)  It was all in the grand plan.  So out comes the cutting jig for the siding. The shop has long straight sides so it won't take too long.

Setting up for cutting

I started on the south wall and was done in a couple of hours.

The front wall goes as high as the mid band where the board and batten starts.

I finished the North wall and then finished the siding on the back wall.  Then it was time to set up some scaffolding for the upper gable end. This will need a bit of flashing and trim around the window as well.
Hardie board and soffits completed on the North half

Battens done on the North and time to move the scaffolding.

It's been raining like mad on and off so this is taking longer than I had hoped. The cooler weather is making this job quite pleasant if it wasn't for the mud around the shop.  Hoping for dryer weather and a completion on the weekend.

Garage doors are done

Nice new springs for my heavy wood doors and a couple of rods to tighten them up

Around and around till I see 8 spirals

Finally, a two car garage

Bikes are hung and the tires are in the rack

This is Cathryn's stop point

When the airplane hits the windshield I'm there

Just one last thing to do.

We are looking for some paint to change the colour of the windows to match the house. Another long awaited task getting finished.

Here are a couple of photos of our lastest bluegrass jam.

Everyone seems to enjoy this although it is a bit of work for some of them.

Garage doors R us

What has Len been up to?  Lots of things.  Gardening. Cleaning up.  Spending time in the shop on the Cessna.  House-wise?  Garage!  Garage doors!  Not such a big deal right now but sure will be nice to drag my groceries in under cover when the snow starts to fly.

First was a beef up for the opener attach point

Next was the completion of the drywall on the ceiling
To comply with code and get our permit signed off , the landing in the garage had to be a certain size.  This placed the step into the door opening so that has to go. I took the landing out to shorten it which also allows room for the door track.

A little modification needed

The tracking is next

Then the door sections which I created in Kelowna 2 years ago. The cost to purchase 2 doors made of wood like these would be $7300.  These should be just fine.

Adding the sections
One door complete

2 doors from the inside

Two doors almost done.
The framing is a little off for the height so a small extension on the bottom of the door will be needed.  The trim is not in place so that will fill the upper gap as well.  I intend to paint the windows to match the colour of the house windows eventually.  Now on to the motor drives. I purchased 3 openers complete from an installation firm in Kelowna.  They were taken out of some hockey players mansion when he did a door upgrade.  I got all three for $50 and that gives me a spare in case of problems.
Back to the garage,
Len

Nice weather, time to finish the deck railing

Take a bunch of raw lumber and spend a couple of hours putting it through the planer and you end up with some nice looking fir.

Once it's planed to thickness I cleaned up the edges with the hand planer. Then it was time to carve out the underside so that it will fit over the 2 x 4 rail I have now.

I think I have worn out my dado blade on all this fir
Next job was to clean up the groove and fit the plank for length ready for install

All the straight pieces are in and just require a little finishing on the edge
A final routering for character and voila ready for varethane

The big job will be creating a round top for the deck bump-out
First a good clamping with biscuit joints and glue

I have started trimming to get rid of some of the weight

Here is the final fitting and draw underneath for the 2 x 4 cutout
Trimmed and ready to router, note the lines after tracing the 2 x 4

Routered, time to install

Finishing the roundy bit
A little more varethane and she's all done. That took four days hmmm. I am doing a bit more drywall in the shop to continue with the cleanup and organisation.  More to come.
