Garage doors R us

What has Len been up to?  Lots of things.  Gardening. Cleaning up.  Spending time in the shop on the Cessna.  House-wise?  Garage!  Garage doors!  Not such a big deal right now but sure will be nice to drag my groceries in under cover when the snow starts to fly.

First was a beef up for the opener attach point

Next was the completion of the drywall on the ceiling
To comply with code and get our permit signed off , the landing in the garage had to be a certain size.  This placed the step into the door opening so that has to go. I took the landing out to shorten it which also allows room for the door track.

A little modification needed

The tracking is next

Then the door sections which I created in Kelowna 2 years ago. The cost to purchase 2 doors made of wood like these would be $7300.  These should be just fine.

Adding the sections
One door complete

2 doors from the inside

Two doors almost done.
The framing is a little off for the height so a small extension on the bottom of the door will be needed.  The trim is not in place so that will fill the upper gap as well.  I intend to paint the windows to match the colour of the house windows eventually.  Now on to the motor drives. I purchased 3 openers complete from an installation firm in Kelowna.  They were taken out of some hockey players mansion when he did a door upgrade.  I got all three for $50 and that gives me a spare in case of problems.
Back to the garage,
Len

Nice weather, time to finish the deck railing

Take a bunch of raw lumber and spend a couple of hours putting it through the planer and you end up with some nice looking fir.

Once it's planed to thickness I cleaned up the edges with the hand planer. Then it was time to carve out the underside so that it will fit over the 2 x 4 rail I have now.

I think I have worn out my dado blade on all this fir
Next job was to clean up the groove and fit the plank for length ready for install

All the straight pieces are in and just require a little finishing on the edge
A final routering for character and voila ready for varethane

The big job will be creating a round top for the deck bump-out
First a good clamping with biscuit joints and glue

I have started trimming to get rid of some of the weight

Here is the final fitting and draw underneath for the 2 x 4 cutout
Trimmed and ready to router, note the lines after tracing the 2 x 4

Routered, time to install

Finishing the roundy bit
A little more varethane and she's all done. That took four days hmmm. I am doing a bit more drywall in the shop to continue with the cleanup and organisation.  More to come.

Another blog to follow

Hey fans, if you want to hear about some musical goings-on, go on over to our new blog at
https://cariboohouseconcerts.blogspot.com.  Now that the main part of the house is more or less finished, we are hosting some musical events.   Not sure when the next one will happen but we hope it will be before summer.

April's goings-on

Hi Folks.
Time sure flies when you're having fun!  We are a little behind on the blog, but you must be getting used to that by now.

For the third week of April, the goal was to have the guest quarters above the garage ready for Linda and Barry who were coming on that Friday.  That meant trim, doors, and finishing touches to the bathroom.

Trim, trim and more trim in the garage to be painted

Windows done

Yes, back into messy-mode again

Baseboards done too
To do our plans for accent tiles in the bathroom, Len had to invent a way to hold them up while they glued.  He used wood to support them, and also used them as guides for straight and true.
Clever supports

Tiles in place

The finished project - minus the grout
The bathroom ready for guests

On the last day, at 10 pm, Len was gluing down the last of the stair tread carpeting.
Glue and then stapled

Completed stairway
It was great to have the loft cleaned up and ready to go.  All in the nick of time.

What a difference a couple of weeks makes

Wow!  Went away for Easter and when we got back, most of the snow was gone.  We have had lovely days and warm temperatures.  I think we have moved on from winter!  Below are the LAST pictures of winter in the Cariboo!

March 16th!

My poor raspberries prior to the thaw
Len mounted the weather station
The laundry room cabinet and sink is finished.  Here I am doing the painting of the cabinet doors.

Len finished the flooring in the master bedroom too.
Finishing the entry way in the master bedroom

The finishing touch

The threshold between the bedroom and great room is finished as well
We have gone back into construction-mode on the garage loft.  We have primed and painted the walls, now working on getting the trim painted.  We will put down the carpet and start putting in baseboards and window trim.  Then we will be ready to put the furniture and welcome guests!
Garage loft bathroom painted

Back in construction mode (sigh)

The stairwell painting needs to be finished

The handrail and trim on the light switches will go on after the paint

Len is away in Vancouver for a couple of days.  Watch for more (slow) progress when he gets back on the weekend.

Finishing touches

Dear Reader,
Sorry that you have been neglected.  The truth is that while Len works on bits and pieces everyday, a larger portion of his time has been spent in the shop "organizing" than previous.  Its all good.

When I got home from my last trip, I was delighted to see that the one little dark corner in the kitchen was gently lit.  Apparently putting in the LED lighting was a bigger deal than planned.  You can't cut the wire on this unit, so it had to be coiled and somehow concealed below the cabinet. Len opted to add a triangle of shelving below the cabinet for this purpose.

Cleverly hidden wiring and puck lights

The result is lovely
Then, after I finished the painting of doors, Len got the cabinet in the master bath put together.

Mom and Dad gave us those lovely red towels for Christmas in 2011.  They now have a home!

The shower, still waiting for a couple of tiles

Its hard to get a good shot of the bathroom, but you get the idea
The next thing that needs to be finished is the cabinet in the laundry room. The sink is hooked up and works.  Len has been fitting the doors and soon they will be ready for paint.  Meanwhile, the laundry room is a bit of a disaster.

Under construction
We took some time off today to play some music, then Len was off to the shop.  He has been putting up drywall and organizing some more.

Meanwhile, I am making peanut butter cookies and reading by the fire.  Speaking of which, Len made a giant one this morning.

I took a picture for my iPad wallpaper

Isn't it great?  Honestly,  we spend every morning sitting here with our lattes.  Life is good.

More winter, more cabinets

A beautiful dump of short lived snow and I am getting to the finish point in our bathroom.

Cath takes a picture of water coming from the tap to prove that it is here finally. The master bath has water and will soon have doors to finish the cabinet.
Yes it works
And now onto something completely different, sort of.  I have created another cabinet but this time it is for the laundry room.  I thought that I might as well do all of these at the same time while my mind was in the mode.  I have made all the doors and hopefully I won't have to set up for any more.

Cabinet in place

Cathryn is busy applying the final coats of colour to the doors
I also made two solid core doors for the ash clean-out and the under stair vacu-flo area. They are ready for paint and will get installed as I get to the basement stuff.

I've started a bit more drywall in the shop to finish off behind the workbenches and painted the office wall so that I could hang all of my clamps there. I'll finish that and the vanity doors tomorrow.
